The stories in this book are rooted in folk legends, oral account from relatives, others' writings, secular life and the author's creation. Most of them are about ghosts and spirits. Some also talk about miraculous people and strange things. Yuan Mei uses concise text, documentary writing style and bizarre stories to show the lustrous and dazzling phenomena in the world. He uses extremely humorous and obscure way to reveal the ""evils"" in ordinary life, involving morality, system, religion, customs and other aspects of human nature. It consists of six chapters: gods, monsters, ghosts and goblins, miraculous people, thaumaturgy and anecdotes. There are also creative illustrations of ghosts according to the contents.
